4 Ways to Make Back-to-School Shopping a Walk in the Park

Cache's School SuppliesWe’re at the halfway point for summer, which means we’re closing in on back-to-school season again! My mini-humans aren’t as excited as I am, but maybe that’s because I’m not allowed to go to school (there was this one time I went to something called ‘obedience school’…let’s just say it was an experience we’ll all remember; I’m not allowed to go anymore). Interestingly enough, I’ve noticed my mom and dad humans are also not so pleased with the coming of back-to-school. They keep talking about the expenses that add up and groaning over all the new things our mini-humans need that they will likely outgrow anyways.

I hate seeing my family unhappy, so I took matters into my own paws to help them find some technology to help make back-to-school season fun again!

For the Best Discounts: RetailMeNot
Free; Available on Android and iOS

Before you do any shopping, check RetailMeNot.com or download their handy app. RetailMeNot provides an aggregate of over 500,000 up-to-date coupons from major retailers including Target, Nike, JC Penny, Walmart, Bed Bath & Beyond and lots more! Plus, the app offers discounted gift cards and cash-back offers. All you have to do is show the coupon to the cashier at the store upon checkout.

For Rewards: FLOK
Free; Available on Android and iOS

Some humans are all about shopping at places with rewards programs. Whether it’s points for miles or cash back for music, entertainment and even just plain cash; make that back-to-school shopping work for you by shopping at stores that are part of the FLOK network of loyalty programs. FLOK boasts rewards earned for just signing up, as well as for doing non-shopping things like checking in at a retailer offering FLOK or inviting friends to join. Start earning rewards immediately and use them at any time!

For the Lowest Prices: ShopSavvy
Free; Available on Android and iOS

Do you like comparison shopping before making your eventual purchase? (You know…the thrill of the hunt and all that.) Then this is the app for your back-to-school needs! The app allows you to scan the barcode of an item you want to purchase and runs the item through its database of over 40,000 stores to find the lowest prices for that item! Better yet, the database includes online-only retailers so you can be sure to find the place that works for you, and the app updates in real-time so you’ll always get the lowest price at that moment!

For Second-Hand Items: Facebook Marketplace
Free; Available on Android and iOS (as part of the Facebook app)

My mini-humans are constantly growing and changing, and my mom and dad humans are seemingly always frustrated with having to buy them new clothes, books and other items that they just seem to outgrow after a year. With Facebook Marketplace, my humans can sell those items no longer needed by or fitting my mini-humans as well as buy gently used second-hand items right in the community, and usually for a lot less than the original price. You can search for something specific or browse by category, add filters for price and sort by item location proximity, too. As a buyer, you send a message to the seller to arrange the sale (and when you’re a seller, you post the listing and sit back and wait for those messages to come in!).

There’s actually plenty of places to buy and sell second-hand items online. Besides the well-known Craigslist, eBay and Amazon Marketplace routes, there’s a host of online and/or app-based second-hand “stores” that allow you to buy and sell a myriad of items, some of which (like Decluttr, OfferUp, & LetGo) I’ve reviewed in the past from a seller’s standpoint but are equally as good from a buyer perspective.

While by no means an exhaustive list, I hope these four ways to get the best deals on back-to-school shopping will give you some great ideas to start with. Now all I have to do is get them in front of my humans… I always hear how things are easy “like a walk in the park,” so maybe I’ll get to tell them on our next walk and they’ll easily understand me! (I think that’s how that works. We’ll find out, anyways.)

Until next time,
Your pawsitively pawesome pal Cache
