It’s Cool to Go Back to School, I Paw-mise.

Cache holding up a school backpackOh boy, oh boy, oh boy—it’s back-to-school season again! I can’t help but get excited as my mini-humans start to get ready for another year of learning. I wish I could go with them, and once I even tried to chase the bus down the street, but I guess the driver didn’t hear me barking to stop. And while my mom and dad humans seem pretty pleased, my mini-humans don’t seem too thrilled to be putting away the summer toys in exchange for backpacks, pens and notepads.

I just had to take matters into my own paws to help them get excited, and I found some super apps that will help make this year’s school season the best one yet:

Cram Flashcards
Free and Available for Android and iOS
The days of creating and keeping track of printed 3×5 index cards are behind us. The Cram app (which syncs with your free Cram.com website account) allows you to build flashcard sets for whatever study needs you have, or you can choose from over 75 million sets already created by other students! When it comes to study time, choose from four modes: card mode (the typical way you use flashcards), memorize mode (automatically hiding cards so you can concentrate on the ones you didn’t answer correctly the first time), cram mode (utilizing memorize mode but with spaced repetition based on the Leitner learning model) and game mode (who doesn’t like learning by playing games?). One thing to note is that Android currently only supports the Card and Memorize modes. The app also works offline, so you’re ready to study no matter where you are!

MyHomework
Free and Available for Android and iOS
Just like with flashcards, the digital age has also provided a handy replacement for that printed agenda and homework planner we’re used to carrying around. Free apps like MyHomework take study and homework reminders to a new level with instant access to the assignments and due dates on upcoming papers, tests and homework that you’ve added in. With this app, simply swipe right to clear the item once you’ve completed it! And, if your child’s teacher uses the educator-facing site, Teachers.io, you can also see assignments directly from their feed (handy when the mini-humans promise they don’t have homework… but really do).

Alarm Clock Plus
Available for Android only; Free Version and $0.99 Version for no ads
Even though smart devices come with their own set of apps, sometimes it’s nice to customize. Alarm Clock Plus is one such app, currently only available for Android phones. It allows you to customize not only the alarm sound, but the length of snooze time, the volume level as the alarm goes off (including a setting that gets louder the longer the alarm sound is on) and you can even set it up to ask math questions and brain teasers. Now that’s a pretty great way to get my mini-humans’ noggins’ going in the morning!

Khan Academy
Free and Available for Android and iOS
More than just a tutoring tool, the Khan Academy App is touted as one of the top learning apps out there. Choose from thousands of videos and articles covering hundreds of topics including science, computing, math, finance, economics, grammar, government, politics and history! You can even get instant feedback when practicing questions, get hints for tough topics, bookmark your favorites to come back to and, best yet, this app is available offline so you can take your studies wherever you go.

Duolingo
Free and Available for Android and iOs
These days, the mini-humans are learning more than just traditional Spanish and French languages. No matter if its Mandarin (Chinese), Italian, German or even Greek, you’ll find learning a new language is a cinch with this app that feels more like a fun game. Practice reading, writing, speaking and listening with Chatbots and earn points for correct answers, all in a cheerful and helpful setting.

EasyBib
Free and Available for Android and iOs
Research papers are tough enough without having to ensure your sources are cited correctly. EasyBib takes all the stress out of remembering citations for the varied writing formats: simply scan the book’s bar code into the app, or copy and paste the website URL, choose which writing style and it will automatically create the correct citation for your paper’s bibliography!

Ready4 SAT
Free and Available for Android and iOs
Ready4 has a whole series of fantastic test prep apps, and Ready4 SAT is a top app for your mini-but-lager-humans preparing for college. What’s more, this app doesn’t just go through practice questions; it provides material in mobile-friendly chunks and with test-taking tips, too! You can even match your potential SAT score from the app with schools and academic programs around the world, in case you want to know how you stand up (and maybe give you some more motivation on tougher subjects).

It seems like there’s a surplus of educational and learning apps to help make the school year a breeze. These are just a few, and I plan to keep on searching (what else am I going to do with my new free time without the mini-humans?), so stay tuned for more apps and handy tech that will help back-to-school season feel more back-to-cool!

Until then,
Your pawsitively pawesome pal Cache
