Sniffing Out The Best Mobile Apps For Your Fall Road Trip

Fall is in full swing, and the humans are back to their usual schedules, with the mini-humans fully in school mode. Fall also means it’s time for Mom’s parents to come visit from some place called “Cunettickit,” which they say is a very far drive! Grandma always brings special cookies just for me, and Grandpa loves to throw big sticks for me to chase down! I get so excited that every time I hear the distinct sound of their car crunching over the gravel in the driveway, I chase my tail in circles!

I heard Mom talking to Grandpa on the phone yesterday. Apparently, they took a detour and got lost on the way! Mom sounded exasperated as she tried to explain to Grandpa how to use his new smartphone to help them navigate, but it did not sound like it went very well. Later, Mom and Dad were talking about making sure Grandma and Grandpa would be safe on the road. They said they are not “spring chickens” anymore (I didn’t know they were ever chickens! This is probably for the best, because I think chicken is tasty …).

Either way, they’re getting old in human years, and I care about them very much! I do not want them to get lost and in trouble, because unlike me, they cannot use their nose to sniff their way back! After Mom and Dad went to bed, I decided to do some sniffing around the internet for some apps to show Grandma and Grandpa so their road trips go much smoother!

For Navigation:

Waze
Free; Available on Android & iOS

Waze is owned by Google, and their up-to-date road-mapping technology is the basis of the app. Like Google Maps, Waze allows you to customize your route to avoid things such as freeways, tolls or difficult intersections. In addition, Waze sources information from users in real time to notify drivers of a host of road-related events, including upcoming hazards, construction, vehicles on the side of the road and even the presence of police officers. Waze also allows you to calculate routes with multiple stops, includes the cost of tolls during route selection, and offers a one-touch feature to find the nearest gas, food or lodging.

Maps.Me
Free; Available on Android & iOS

Often during road trips, you will travel through areas without cell phone service and internet. If you try to input a new location into your GPS app (such as Waze) while in one of these areas, you will not be able to find directions. Maps.Me fills this gap, providing downloadable maps from all over the world that can be used on your phone even when you’re completely offline! These offline maps are complete with navigation so you never get lost—even without a cell phone signal.

For Weather Information:

Weather Underground
Free; Available on Android & iOS

When you’re on the road, an unexpected rainstorm, blizzard, high winds or other weather-related hazards can slow or even halt your journey. Always be in the know with Weather Underground, which uses a combination of data from both commercial and over 200,000 personal weather stations, as well as user-generated reports to forecast the most accurate and most local weather. Their interactive maps and radar allow you to keep an eye on the weather throughout your entire trip, and their alert system ensures you never miss an emergency weather update near you or on your route.

For Necessities:

HotelTonight
Free; Available on Android & iOS

HotelTonight provides last-minute hotel options at last-minute rates! You can search by your current geolocation, or look for where you will be later in the day. HotelTonight also features the Daily Drop, a special deal for each user that unlocks for 15 minutes and contains a current HotelTonight offering at a much lower price. Bringing HotelTonight along for the ride will ensure you are never without a place to sleep when you need one.

GasBuddy
Free; Available on Android & iOS

Have you ever filled up, only to see a gas station down the road featuring lower prices? GasBuddy will show you where to find the cheapest gas on your route or near your current location so you can spend more of your road trip money enjoying the sights along the way! GasBuddy also offers a free Pay with GasBuddy card that can be used at numerous participating retailers to accumulate even more gas savings. Even without the rewards, the free Pay with GasBuddy card comes with an automatic 5¢ savings on every gallon!

iExit
Free; Available on Android & iOS

Plan your next pit stop with ease thanks to iExit, which contains a list of amenities located at every exit off every interstate in the country. The app will automatically find your location and populate options from upcoming exits, allowing you to navigate with just one touch. In addition, iExit is integrated with Opis (to populate real-time gas prices), Yelp (to help you discover new and reputable businesses), and Travel Coupons (to provide you with deals relevant to where you are currently located).

SpotAngels
Free; Available on Android & iOS

When you’re visiting or passing through a strange city, finding parking can be the biggest challenge. SpotAngels eases the frustration by providing real-time data on nearby parking meters, garages and areas offering free street parking. After helping you find your spot, SpotAngels records the location so you’ll always remember where you parked. Additionally, SpotAngels sends notifications to your phone when your parking is about to expire, so you never get that ticket for forgetting to watch the clock!

There are many apps out there to help on your road trip, but these are some of my favorites. They are also all free, which means Grandma and Grandpa can use some of the money they save during their trip to buy Cache a new toy! Before you take your next road trip, be sure you’re technologically ready, so you don’t get lost like my grandparents! Otherwise, you may have to sniff your way all the home like I do.

Until next time,
Your pawsitively pawesome pal Cache
